Then how do you explain Ricky looking like hot garbage against Luis Collazo at 147 pounds and nearly losing the fight? He looked so bad he went immediately back down to 140 pounds and stayed there until Mayweather gave him a shot to fight him.

Just because someone balloons up after fights doesn't mean they are closer to whatever fat ass weight that is. Hatton was and always will be a 140 pound fighter. Because when he's in shape, that's his best weight class.

Why you forgetting his height and reach? its not suited for 147 unless your something special. His height and reach is best suited for smaller guys 140 where he can use his weight advantage as well. 147 guys are bigger and hard to hit if they are skilled enough . ricky never did and never will fit in 147..

Hatton's dimensions are not big enough to really work for him above 140lbs. His success comes from him being able to bully opponents and being powerful at the weight - once he moves up to welterweight he loses that edge in strength and his fighting style is nullified to degree. So even if he does have to cut a possibly unhealthy amount of weight for junior welter fights it's still the better option than conceding basically all of his advantages.

Saying that, Mayweather was at the time a small welterweight himself and if you watch the fight there's clearly not a substantial size difference. I take that version of Hatton over the version Pacquiao eventually got his hands on any day.

Also the people that cite the Collazo fight as empirical evidence that Hatton is ineffective at welterweight are doing Collazo a great disservice, and are failing to take into consideration that it's possible to just have bad nights sometimes in boxing, be it due to unfavourable style clashes or bad luck or whatever.

It was never a magical spell at 147lbs that made Hatton struggle. Its the fighters at that weight. Guys with similar styles would give him problems at 140lbs as well.

Hatton was not a great fighter at 147. Simple as that. His physical dimensions and style of fighting were best suited at 140.
