Floyd Mayweather Jr. Set to Announce Next Fight in Dubai
Floyd Mayweather Jr. said he is getting ready to fight again, but not in Las Vegas, Nevada. Instead, he said his next fight would be in Dubai and it will be announced very soon.
Robin Leach of Las Vegas Weekly said he was with the undefeated American boxer over the weekend at the Del Mar Racetrack, north of San Diego.
"He told me that he was getting ready to fight again and that the bout would be in Dubai", Leach said in his Las Vegas Weekly column.
“We’ll announce it all very soon,” he told me. “But this time it won’t be in Vegas. It will be in another desert kingdom—Dubai.”
With this latest word from Mayweather, it appears the Pacquiao-Margarito fight is now headed for nowhere.
The Pacquiao-Margarito fight has not been finalized despite Bob Arum's announcement that the state of Texas is ready to give the Mexican boxer a license to fight in the state. An application for a license has been filled, but there is no certainty it will be granted.
Margarito failed to get his license back from the California State Athletic Commission after he was barred from fighting in the state following his controversial illegal hand wraps case.
That is of course if Mayweather is talking about fighting this year and if he is talking about a November date with Manny Pacquiao. But, he said it will be announced very soon and most likely he is talking about fighting this year.
An announcement for a match that will take place next year will have a little impact on the promotional aspect of the fight as no definite date can be set until after the scheduled fight of Pacquiao this November. That is again assuming he has finally decided to square off with the Filipino boxer.
Besides, many things can happen between now and May next year when Pacquiao can again entertain aspiring new opponents for his next fight. That would give him at least eight months of rest which is about the same period when he last fought Joshua Clottey in March this year.
It may be true that Mayweather is serious in fighting again this year based on his conversation with Robin Leach. But nowhere in his talks with Leach did he mention his would-be opponent.
Still, he mentioned Dubai as the next venue for his fight. And we all know that Pacquiao's adviser Michael Koncz and his promoter Bob Arum have been negotiating with the authorities in Dubai as an alternative venue for the Pacquiao-Mayweather match.
Is Mayweather talking about a date with Manny Pacquiao in Dubai this year?
