    Mayweather-Bruseles in Miami!

    December 9, 2004

Two-time world champion "Pretty Boy" Floyd Mayweather Jr. will bring his undefeated record to the AmericanAirlines Arena on Saturday, January 22 when he takes on tough Henry "El Nitro" Bruseles of Puerto Rico in the "Showdown on the Bay" on a card presented by Top Rank Inc.

Mayweather (31-0, 21 KOs), a former World Boxing Council (WBC) super featherweight and lightweight champion, will face Bruseles (21-2-1, 24 KOs) of Caguas, Puerto Rico in a 12-round world elimination battle at 140 pounds.

The bout will be telecast live by HBO during its Championship Boxing program schedule for 9:00 p.m. (ET). First bell is schedule for 7:30 p.m.

"Mayweather is one of the best in the world and Bruseles is a young strong boxer who wants to prove that he belongs at this level. It should be a good night for our return to Florida," said Bob Arum of Top Rank Inc.

Mayweather is one of the most skillful boxers in the world and is considered by many to be the best pound per pound boxer in the world. Now looking for a third world title, this should be a good test for the former Oympian medallist.

After eight successful defenses of the WBC Super Featherweight title, Mayweather moved up and captured WBC Lightweight crown with an unanimous decision victory over Jose Luis Castillo of Mexico on April 24, 2002 in Las Vegas.

On his most recent effort on May 22 of this year in Atlantic City, Mayweather took home a unanimous decision win over former junior welterweight champion DeMarcus Corley in his first test at 140-pounds.

Bruseles, 24, was a top amateur boxer in Puerto Rico before turning pro on February 8, 1999, with a first round knockout of Vance Thompson in Inglewood, California. Bruseles won his first 16 professional fights. He is 5-1-1 in his last six fights, with his only loss a very controversial 10 decision against Ernesto Zavala in San Jose, California.

In what should be name the fight of the year in 2004 in Puerto Rico, Bruseles stopped Wilfredo Negron in the seventh round of a very intense and dramatic bout on February 6, 2004.

"It's a good opportunity for me to show that I can fight the best in the world and I'm looking forward to fighting Mayweather on January 22," said Bruseles, who is trained by Evangelista Cotto, uncle and trainer of Puerto Rican superstar Miquel Cotto.

The undercard for the night will include a world championship which will be soon announced by Top Rank.

Additionally, there will be four more fights scheduled for the evening. Of local interest is a match in the works featuring Cuban defector Yamplier "Yanqui Diaz" Azcuy (13-1) in a heavyweight contest.

"Yanqui Diaz" has gained serious attention from his recent victories over ranked heavyweights Vaughn Bean and Juan Carlos Gomez. The match up for this fight should prove to be a crowd pleasers with the local Cuban community.
