when i read this thread earlier today i thought the same, i looked it up to post the actual history of it but i came up with that his great grandfather was from ireland who emigrated to America, and he married a freed African American slave, they had a son that married an african american, one of their daughters married Cassius Clay senior and they settled in Louisville, and then had Cassius Clay jnr aka Ali

The name Clay doesnt come from Ireland. His Irish family name was Grady. I have no idea what Cassius Clay snr's family tree is though so i dont know where the name Clay came from.
