Let's discuss our favorite fighters of all time. Who are the fighters you admire and appreciate the most throughout history, and why do you think this is? I feel we all have our own reasons for liking the fighters we like, Nationality seems to be a big factor among most, as does style and attitude of the combatant.
1. Marco Antonio Barrera
Perhaps the fighter who should be credited as bringing me to East Side Boxing and inspiring me to follow the sport religiously. I love his textbook combination's to body and head, and his stoic demeanor I find to be admirable. Showed tremendous character in bouncing back from multiple devastating defeats, but I'd like to see the Mexican legend retire soon. Gave us some of the best fights of the last 30 years such as Barrera/Mckinney and Barrera/Morales I.
2. Myung-Woo Yuh
First was introduced to this gem of a fighter on Youtube, where I watched him take a fighter called Tokushima apart in a one-sided contest. The first thing you will notice is his discipline, how he'd always go downstairs and dig in with body shots. Threw good combination's, and utilized great head movement to avoid his opponents punches. Not much in the way of power, but a consummate professional sporting god-like stamina.
3. Gerry Penalosa
I believe Gerry could have established himself as one of the best Super Flyweights of all time had he made better career decisions and received a little more luck than he did. Lost multiple close fighters in Asia, fights that I felt he won, and this caused him to retire for a brief amount of time before coming back to again become a World Champion. Wonderful southpaw, great puncher to body and head, reminiscent of an Orlando Canizales in this respect, but he could be outworked. Great body movement and a high guard.
4. Orlando Canizales
Easily the greatest Bantamweight of his generation, befuddling his opposition with lateral movement and impressive footwork. A two-fisted fighter, Orlando was one of the best combination punchers of his generation, who possessed above average power as a Bantamweight. Rarely ever hurt, Orlando would often fight down to the level of opposition which caused him to have close bouts with inferior fighters such as Bill Hardy and Paul Gonzalez. A likable character.
5. Alexis Arguello
Nobody has a bad word to say about the late Alexis Arguello, who destroyed his opponents in the ring with his superior technique and punching power, only to then console them afterwards and congratulate them on their efforts. A multi-weight world champion when belts really meant something, who possessed a killer body attack. Just ask Kobayashi about that. His first fight with Pryor and his wars with Escalera are among the most exciting that took place during the 1980s.
I'm also a big fan of Michael Spinks, Donovan Ruddock, Michael Carbajal, and Yuri Arbachakov.
