Martinez look gassed in the last 2 rounds, completely nothing left in the tank where as Burns still had something to offer. A huge step down for Martinez tonight as Burns isn't the best technical fighter but won the war in determination to win the fight.

I can't believe he is world champion.

Could this be the start of a new boom for British boxers, when we get what we believe to be decent domestic level fighters claiming world titles?

Next week we get Jason Booth outboxing Steve Molitor. That would be silly.

He has tons of heart. But the way people are going on about him as hes the best fighter in the world. This was just a matchup of the guy with no power vs the guy with no energy. Great fight to watch! Just dont agree with all the nuthuggers getting on his balls after 1 fight.

              what nuthuggers? where?

The only person who thought Ricky Burns could be a world champion was Ricky Burns.

Martinez was so disappointing. just slugging away, arm punches, very amateurish!
Martinez was not throwing arm punches, which is why he was hurting Burns every time he landed a clean power punch. Burns looked as if he could go any minute in the 7th and a few other times when he got hurt and laid on the ropes.

Martinez had too many offensive and defensive liabilities:

Offensively, he couldn't fight on his back foot, he couldn't counter the ridiculously wide and ill advised right uppercuts (1 left hook counter and it was lights out) Martinez kept throwing, and he couldn't setup his power punches.

Defensively, he couldn't avoid Burns' jab or his uppercut.

I'm not trying to take away any credit from Burns, I'm just breaking down the fights analytically.

Yeah Martinez hurt Burns a few times but always at the end of a round and long enough for Burns to survive. Fair play for him being in such great shape.

The term crude was made for Martinez.
