Every time a fight of note comes up, it's on Pay-Per-View. I've got to go down to the local watering hole to listen to endless racist arguments about boxing. I'm talking to you, drunken latinos, drunken white frat boys, and drunken black frat boys. I'd cover other "drunken" races, but I live in Memphis, Tennesee, so I don't come in contact with any.
The good news is, that after the fight I get to see the lesser undercards: drunk fools fighting each other in the parking lot to avenge their fallen fighter. Someone refers to Roy Jones Jr. as an "Ni--er" or to a mexican fighter as a "*******" and sub-par fighters duke it out haymaker style, not just with fists, but with tire irons and broken beer bottles.
Actually, what am I complaining about? The fights I get to see should be put on PPV. They are usually more entertaining than the PPV fights.
But what depresses me is that a sport I love is followed by goons and thugs. They don't see the art or beauty in it, they just see the violence, and thats all they care about. These people are Americans like you and me, they just lack the ability to see the intangibles of the greatest sport in the world.
I could never be a fighter. I lack too many qualities. One of the qualities i lack is the disposable income to afford seeing PPV fights at home, so I've got to go out into the world of idiots.
But to be racist in Memphis (greatest town in the world): if you want to see a fight at a local watering hole I've had better experiences in the barrio than the ******. Latinos have a love for boxing that is almost religious (as i do, and I'm a 6' 2" white dude) that seems to welcome diversity. If I go to a sports bar populated with either white dudes or black dudes racial violence almost always breaks out. I'm not sure what anybody's trying to prove. It's a sport friends, anybody works hard enough can be good, regardless of race.
