Forget Berto and Martinez, Mayweather needs to fight Paul Williams

Let's face it, going into a Pacquiao fight in May after a year layoff would be very ******, and Floyd would get knocked the f**k out. It would mean he averaged about 1 fight in the last five years coming into the fight, and he'd be approaching his mid 30s. Those two things don't mix very well.

This is why he needs to fight now. But whose left that would actually matter beside Williams? Floyd has gotten himself into some deep s**t and ESPN has been trashing him for the past few months, so he needs to redeem himself. Fighting Berto would be worse than Pacquiao fighting Clottey, because he's just as unknown and on top of that hasn't fought anything above a B level fighter, whereas Clottey has fought and looked impressive against world class fighters. Fighting Matthew Hatton would make him the biggest joke in boxing, especially after he struggled against Branco and almost got killed by Nuzhenko in one round. Sergio Martinez would be a great fight to everyone here at BoxingScene and anyone who actually cares about boxing, but let's face it, that's like 7% of the people who buy Mayweather's PPVs. Martinez is about as known as Clottey and Berto to the American public.

Now don't get me wrong, Williams probably draws just as badly as those three and possibly worse, BUT Mayweather-Williams would look very attractive. If some random dude saw a Mayweather-Berto/Martinez commercial, they'd be like damn this coward's back and its not against Pac, and who the f**k is his opponent?" But if someone saw a Mayweather-Williams commercial, they'd say something like "Damn that guy is HUGE. And look how many punches he's throwing!"

And let's not forget that Williams has wins over a prime Antonio Margarito (the guy Pac's fighting), the Middleweight champion Sergio Martinez (controversial or not, the win is still on his resume) and Winky Wright (old, but again its the name). GBP/Don King/whoever Floyd's with would milk the f**k out of that resume. And tell me that wouldn't sell to the public.

Heck, Pacquiao-Williams would be huge too. Once someone saw how big the size difference was, they'd buy the PPV even if they've never watched boxing before in their entire life. I mean Williams is almost a foot taller than the guy lol

I don't think you quite understood what I said. I would LOVE to see Mayweather-Martinez, but it wouldn't be the smartest choice. Mayweather is in some deep s**t right now (and I'm even having seconds thoughts about him as a fan), so his next move will determine a lot. Williams would be the smartest choice of opponents if he wants to redeem himself with the public. Plus he'd be going up against someone who beat Margo, instead of someone who lost to him (yes I know Sergio was young, but you know how ****** people on here are).
