Froch Confirms WBC title at stake+kessler

Carl Froch says his next fight will be for the WBC super-middleweight title.

Froch, who lost his title against Mikkel Kessler in April, faces Arthur Abraham in Monaco in October as part of the Super Six tournament.

It had been thought that the bout would be a non-title contest, but an injury to Kessler has changed that.

Froch, 33, told BBC Radio Nottingham: "This fight with Abraham will be for the WBC title... and will be a straight semi-final. It's good news for me."

Kessler's win over Froch - the first defeat of the Nottingham man's career - had meant the fight with Abraham on 2 October was to decide whether Froch made it through to the semi-finals of the Super Six.

"It was going to be Group Stage Three, almost a quarter-final, and then we go through to the semis and the final," Froch explained.

But last week Kessler announced that he was withdrawing from the tournament, and would not be training in the next year as he looks to recover from an eye injury.

Froch said: "There's me and Abraham left, and we're fighting. Andre Ward versus Andre Dirrell is the other semi. So in the final, you'll have a WBC-WBA unification fight. After the final, Kessler's got a shot at the WBC.

"Kessler will be what they call the 'marital' WBC champion, which means that Abraham and I are fighting for my old title.

"It means I'll be world champion assuming I do the job properly and Kessler would get a shot at challenging for his old belt back because he vacated it.

"So there's an undisputed world title fight in the final, which will probably be at Madison Square Garden in New York.

"I've got to do the business in my next fight, or it's curtains."

I like watching both boxers but backing AA to pull through.

so this is the semi finals now? quality. and kessler still gets to fight again to try and redeem himself? brilliant.

...bad for green though, fought the most highly rated person in the super six and didn't get a chance against the other big name "easier" fights.
