That's right folks, Ivan Calderon took a knee in the 8th round against Giovanni Segura on Saturday night--similar to how Cotto took a knee in the Margo fight. I've already read some posts on other boards that try to suggest this fight was similar to Cotto-Margo. It was not. Calderon was not dishing out any punishment whatsoever. He landed some good counter shots in the fight, but they were very few and far between. Segura was a bull in there, and took charge from the onset landing body shots and backing Calderon up against the ropes. Calderon was on his bicycle for the entire fight trying to stay away from Segura but it didn't work. In the 4th, Segura and Calderon were exchanging a lot of punches when Ivan was against the ropes, but Calderon was the one getting damaged. In the 5th, Ivan was seriously hurt from a barrage of punches and Segura wouldn't quit throwing. It was a 10-8 round on my card. I kinda thought Ivan was gonna quit in the 5th, but he managed to survive. All in all, I wasn't surprised of the outcome because I knew exactly what Segura was going to do, and I knew there was nothing Calderon could do about it. This is what happens when you step up and face an excellent fighter like Segura. Maybe if Calderon had fought tougher opposition coming up he would've had a better shot tonight. Lastly, Calderon was not shot. Not at all. He got beat up--plain and simple. His legs did not fail him, Segura's bodyshots are what did him in.
Calderon took the kind of beating that probably ended his career. Segura, on the other hand, will hopefully continue to challenge himself and by that I mean Roman Gonzalez. That's a fight I would love to see.
