There was very little risk in this for the UFC and a huge upside. You'll never see White agree to let a Klitschko or Haye fight a UFC champ, at least not while they are champion boxers.

Probably worth mentioning that Haye has always said he'd get smoked in MMA, having sparred it before and not be able to avoid being taken down.

        Boxing vs MMA

This debate is like comparing apples and oranges. Yes they are in the category of fruits just like MMA and boxing are combat sports but they are totally different.

The only way to really show the difference is to fight two fights. A boxer will fight in MMA terms and an MMA fighter fight in boxing terms. So Couture destroyed Toney, but let's schedule another fight on with Couture with boxing gloves using boxing rules. I can probably tell you that Couture will probably get KO'd. It's just a totally different sport.

Well I bit and bought the pay per view. Toney with the badd mouth, looked like a "beluga whale" hitting the mat. That was the sickest job of fighting I have ever witnessed !! SIC

I agree these are two different sports and both have there advantages.

I saw the whole thing, I had much rather watch boxing than MMA. Even the main event held drama but nothing like a great elite fight between two great fighters, in my opinion it doesn't compare.

The first adjustment I would say for a boxer is to try in a more crouched position to be in a better position to defend for a possible takedown attack. Don't make yourself so long, be more compact. An image of a vintage Mike Tyson comes to mind.
Not saying this would even the playing fileld but may reduce some exposure.
You can strike low if they come for your legs and you can always come up and strike.

I doubt either the Klitschkos or Haye are dumb/desperate enough to compete in another sport without being fully prepared. Toney was desperate for a payday and wasn't going to get one in boxing.

That being said, I also don't think Dana White is anxious to see any top boxers in the Octagon against his fighters. He's got Toney's scalp and feels he's proven something. Why risk it again?
