... I watched Chad Dawson lose meekly to Jean Pascal the other week and I remember wondering why his corner seemed to be struggling to motivate him.
Had I been there, I could have been in his corner, going "come on, Chad! Imagine you're on the mean streets of Connecticut! Get out there and take your man!"
Chad would have looked me square in the eye, turned to me and said 'Scully, you suck as a trainer, I'm going to fire you after just a couple of bouts' and then gone out there and did his thing. Some of you might understand this, but I imagine most of you - particularly those that have never boxed - will be unable to grasp the concept.
When I fought Michael Nunn my trainer tried to do the same thing, hyping me up, saying 'do it for the Ohio State Fair, John' but it didn't get me motivated in the same way. I imagine if I had been motivated properly I may have been able to win four rounds, but it wasn't to be.
Just after I ducked the fearsome Rico Hoye I got another trainer who really started to bring out the best in me. In the corner between each round he would turn to me and say 'Hey, John, I just recorded Play Misty For Me on Tivo... go out there and win this round and I'll let you tape it off onto Betamax so you can sell it in your store.' With that I'd get really pissed and motivated and do what I had to do.
But I imagine this is over the head of most of you.
