At his zenith, Donald Curry was a wonderful boxing tactician. He boxed with an amateurs’ zeal for defense and precision punching – hands held high, elbows tucked in, eyes wide, always searching for an opening. He coupled that with the speed and slashing fists of a professional and a heart that carried him to the welterweight title. As he staked his claim on the boxing scene he was being groomed for a potential super fight with Marvin Hagler. So well thought of was Curry by the boxing establishment that he garnered co-fighter of the year honors by Ring Magazine in 1985 with Hagler, his potential steppingstone to greatness. That year Hagler had engaged in a fight for the ages with Thomas Hearns. Curry had knocked out Hearns’ Kronk Gym stable mate Milton McCrory in the second round to unify the welterweight championship. The young, shy kid from Fort Worth Texas had the boxing world at his feet. [details]

Wow, nice article. Curry did look to have the goods for a while there ... too bad. I still enjoyed the fights he put on early in his career.

I saw Bobby Joe get beaten by Kevin Howard. He'd have no chance with Curry.

I still cannot believe anybody would have fought curry would have given Hagler a decent fight.
But even in '85, as great as he was performing, I thought he needed a lot more time before considering a fight with Hagler.

I'm from the FW area and was really happy to see a fighter from Ft.Worth doing well. I was totally shocked when he lost to Honeyghan and thought that his carreer was over after McCallum. He did impress me later when he fought Michael Nunn and Terry Norris even though he lost he was definately in both fights. It just seemed that he would loose gas as the fight wore on.

Originally posted by Dynamite76That might be true. But if the guy he won the belt from could floor him, then Young might just put together the perfect punch.
That's not a good way to look for a fight to turn out....
Most fighters have been floored at some point in their careers, & that doesn't mean you expect guys with good punches, but 100th the ability, to beat them.
Curry was on several higher levels than BJY.
