One of the most talked about fights on this particular pay-per-view card, ufc 118, will showcase a boxing vs. Mixed martial arts encounter when james "lights out" toney makes his mma debut against randy "the natural" couture.

Toney, with a record of 72-6-3, 44kos as a boxer, and a former middleweight, super middleweight and cruiserweight champion, will put his money where his mouth is, when he challenges couture, who sports a record of 18-10, 10 by tko/submission. Couture is a former ufc light heavyweight and heavyweight champion. Toney's record has key wins over evander holyfield, vassily jirov, mike mccallum, tim littles, iran barkley and michael nunn. Couture's record is equally impressive, with key wins over tim sylvia, victor ortiz, chuck liddell, vitor belfort, mark coleman, pedro rizzo and maurice smith

Why didn't they accept the challenge when Kermit Cintron wanted to fight MMA? Too scared of his wrestling background.

And Roy Jones was willing to fight Anderson Silva but Dana White was terrified that Silva would try and stand with Jones.
Kermit Cintron with wrestling + boxing = MMA fighter (not just a pure boxer)

Same deal with Toney... He is doing wrestling for takedown defense, grappling to learn how to get back to stand up. I've seen him throwing some knees..

Wrestling + ground game + knees + boxing = MMA fighter.

His boxing is main focus, but he is doing other necesarry stuff. Just like Couture's main focus is to wrestler but he is doing other necesarry stuff.

You wan't to proove boxing is superior? Send a boxer in there with no training in other martial arts, and maybe you can do it. But when a boxer works on his wrestling, BJJ, muay thai he is not a pure boxer anymore.. He is MMA (mixed martial arts) fighter.

Dana White isn't nervous. What's to be nervous about? Toney has slim to no chance and slim just ran out of town. There isn't a single way he can win this fight. Like it or not, Couture has easily enough skill to defend Toney's shots briefly in stand up before it goes to the ground and then Toney has not even the littlest bit of hope to do anything there.

Not only that, but he's too far gone to even go in there and just wade in brawling. He can't do that anymore. He's too old and too shot. Trying to set up something the way he would in boxing for a KO won't work because the only thing Couture is going to be trying to do is clinch (ie. take down) Toney.

Think how easy it is for any boxer to get a clinch on Toney now.....If they don't even try to land a punch and only try to get a clinch, even the worst bum could do it to Toney now. You have a guy who is the best in the world at getting in to do just that, only to Toney's shot legs.

This fight will literally be over in thirty seconds. Toney has no hope and everyone but the most deluded, and Toney sadly, knows it.

too bad toney is 42 and shot, punch drunk.

                i do hope he wins

i wish dana could take over boxing and get rid of these snake promoters and these bull**** sactioning bodies.

cant someone like dana or dana himself start a professional boxing championship?

                seriously, why cant they?

you guys are underestimating toney. it seems like couture will kill this guy cuz he has mixed martial arts so that means he has more in his arsenal but toney has got more hands skills and power than anyone couture has ever faced. looked what happen when couture fought chuck. couture got knocked out twice. toney can easily go with the same game plan or even a better one. what happens when couture shoots for a double leg takedown they say? toney can easily catch him in a uppercut and puts him to sleep. but this is ufc and anything can happen...

very true, but it'll be unfair for a boxer as they can only use their hands. for it to be fair if a boxer only uses his boxing skills(hands only) it would be like couture can only use wrestling and wrestling submissions only. meaning he cant throw punches or even kicks. maybe there should be a fighting sport of pure styles only and no mma. that'll be interesting.

also, a boxer going in a octagon with just his boxing skills up a against a mma fighter is will be a slaughter just like a mma fighter going into a boxing ring and can only box.
