So....I did a quick news archive search and came up with this info indicating that Lopez was looking for those big fights.

    from a Dec 1993 article
"Lopez, who weighed 104 3/4, has been seeking a bout with WBC junior flyweight champion Michael Carbajal. "

from a Jul 19, 1993 article after Carbajal defended his titles against Kwan Sum Kim.
"Michael Carbajal] said the fight he wants first is a 108-pound unification bout with World Boxing Association champion Myung-Woo Yuh of South Korea"
"After the victory, Carbajal was asked whether he wanted to fight Mexico's Ricardo Lopez, who is undefeated. If Danny (Carbajal, his brother and trainer) tells me to fight King Kong, I'll fight him," he said. Carbajal would go on to defend against Domingo Sosa before losing to Gonzalez in the rematch.

"So much for the much-anticipated matchup between mighty Lilliputians Michael Carbajal and Ricardo Lopez. Carbajal, who was expected to fight the unbeaten strawweight champion this year, lost a split decision and his IBF light flyweight title to unknown Colombian Mauricio Pastrano."
    from a January 19, 1997 article
You make good points. I agree. It's also a big feather in the cap of Lopez that Saman Sorjaturong (Who he destroyed in 2 rounds) went on to defeat Humberto "Chiquita" Gonzalez for the WBC/IBF 108lb belts. He also made 9 defences of the WBC belt.

Gonzalez beat Carbajal twice. And it showed that Lopez opposition was better than some would like to say. It's just that he was something special and made some very capable fighters look like bad fighters.

I'm laughing real hard right now.

Mainly because this is exactly how I feel about you, without the **** stuff of course .

Boxing scene is ******ed like that. I have no clue why they place slick boxers on a pedestal. Complete boxers are prone to dominate the sport, not slick boxers.

He beat everyone in his weight class. Slick or not. I don't know much about alot of his opponents because in Lopez weightclass, There wasnt alot of longevity. The belts were being passed on and on constantly. Wheras he defended his belt 20 times over an 8 year period. There was good fighter's but nobody to give him a real challenge until he came up against Rosendo Alvarez. Lopez basically ran over everyone before their fight's. Which say's alot about Alvarez because he pushed Ricardo all the way both times.

I just watched highlights of his career and I gotta say he was simply just an awesome fighter skill wise and a pleasure to watch. I think his resume gets shitted on a lot though because he took real long to move up in weight like a lot of people claim. It looked like he did have a size advantage over some of those guys he fought, but I can just tell by his style and his tenacity that he would've beaten both Carbajal and Gonzalez if he fought them.

And his son Alfonzo fights just like him from what I can tell by judging the fight I saw him take part in on FSN. He was mentioned as a couple people's most highly regarded prospects with under 10 fights in that one thread and I included him too.
