Last night I got myself a new favourite fighter to watch. I'd been vaguely aware of threads talking about an Oliveira fight (who I'd seen once) and Augustus (who I'd never seen before) but didn't really take much notice.
Augustus seemed to have talent by the truckload, and although this week's Boxing News looks down upon his "showboating" dismissively, I thought it was one of the most unique and skillful things I've ever seen. Putting himself in and out of range... by disco dancing. This is a guy I would definitely want to see again.
Sadly, however, the fight had the most disturbing, unsettling conclusion I think I've ever seen in a boxing match. Deeply unpleasant to watch, and even more ominous following Oliveira's fight instructions wish of "God bless".
Yet last night I was so impressed with Augustus I checked up on his record... and it's pretty dire. He's got almost as many losses & draws (30) as wins (31) and has lost as many fights as he's won since 2000 (9 apiece).
How can someone with so much apparent talent do so badly? What's the good wordy?
