Mayweather vs Hopkins: Who was FOTY for 2001?

As i write this thread, i am just shooting from recollection about what i remember from that year. Hopkins would win fighter of the year for his two unification wins over Keith Holmes and Tito Trinidad. Mayweather had already won fighter of the year in 1998 but on paper he might have had the better year in 2001. Mayweather beat at the time the bigger Diego Corrales who was unbeaten by TKO, Corrales was knock down 5 times. Mayweather also beat Jesus Chavez in a slugfest that saw alot of inside action, saw the fight only once but it was great and showed his deterimination at the time. He also had a win against Carlos Hernandez- which he did basically fighting with only one hand, as he had injured it and even touched the canvas with his glove giving him his only "official" knockdown of his career- yes critics he was unoffiically down against Judah as well.

Hopkins great victory over Trinidad is dampered by several things. Trinidad was a welterweight who moved into his 3rd division, he won many fights with the power of those infamous handwraps that Nazeem Richardson forced him to rewrap. Also although undefeated; Trinidad basically was getting out boxed by DLH until he ran away the last 4 rounds.

I think FOTY was a close call between BHOP and PBF for that year. You can make arguments for both sides, who do you pick?

At the time, it was a big win i am not sure how old you were back than? Trinidad had just knocked out William Joppy for the WBA middleweight title and was still techinically undefeated. Also with the win BHOP had unified all the titles at MW, so yes it was a big win. Like him or hate him, Tito had scored wins against guys like Vargas(when undefeated), DLH, Whitaker, and Campos(when undefeated.)

BHOP twice the size of Tito wtf did you get that idea? Trinidad is like 5-11 and Bhop is 6-1.

Hopkins, clearly. He unified all the belts in the fight against Tito and Holmes and was a 7-1 underdog against Tito and displayed one of the great performance of the past 20 years or so.

are you ******ed man? Tito was a MW champion at the time, he destroyed Joppy and knocked him out (something Bernard Hopkins couldn't do himself) and was undefeated. As I stated, Tito was a 7-1 favorite over Hopkins. It was such a given he'd win he was already lined up to fight Roy Jones jr. in the immediate fight after which would have been a mega fight obviously but hopkins side tracked those plans.

Apples and Oranges, Trinidad fought at 170 against Jones, and Trinidad had already knocked out a middleweight for the WBA title. Trinidad was not a small welter like a Whitaker. In fact, Tito had trouble making weight often as a welter, and weight and size are two different things. A guy like Duran who started as a Superbantam knockdown Barkley a man much bigger than him.

It Tito was the favorite by many in the boxing world how was it a joke?

You should stick to Pascal threads as your boxing knowledge is being exposed.

I made cases for both guys being FOTY and let others make their choice

Hopkins he entered and won the middle weight tournament, and unified the titles for the first time since Marvin Hargler. Hopkins was fighter of the the year Mayweather was runner up.

That incredible beatdown of Trinidad was enough on it's own to give Hopkins FOTY.

Joppy was a very average fighter.
Many people thought Trinidad was loaded tough.

I have a big problem with that win, like Floyd's win over JMM.

I mean, when you look at the fight, you see a 6.1 ripped strong middleweight bullying a 5.11 blown up,fat suited welterweight.
Hopkins arm was looking as huge as Tito's leg.

Size wise, the fight wasn't looking fair.
                    But hey,Tito shoudn't have **** with EX.
