The competition isn't fantastic at heavyweight, but he doesn't lose rounds, and beats prospect/contenders right and left, with no difficulty at all.

Pascal was just mentioned because he beat undefeated Diaconu and now Chad Dawson, who was very highly revered.
Fair enough as is a pure resume comparison. I think mixing it up a little is more fun (and that's ALL a P4P list is in contemporary terms IMO). Larry Merchant drew laughs when he went with Manny in his top ten after Ledwaba. Turned out he was ahead of the curve. Michael Nunn was once more highly regarded than Azumah Nelson.

That was wrong in the long view. The long view is always the ultimate arbiter. Everything else is noise, but fun noise.

Wlad has beaten seven undefeated fighters:

      Sultan Ibragimov
      Calvin Brock
      Ruslan Chagaev
      Sam Peter
      Elisio Castillo
      Najee Shaheed
      Zoran Vujecic

And he's stopped at least 15 who had never been stopped before.

Chambers, Shultz, Bostice, Barrett, Shufford, Thompson, etc.

      • This is a move that will give the Ring Magazine some recognition and credit...a victory for honesty and reason and finally calling a spade a spade, although it's a better spade than what they are trying to say it is.

It seems to be a sad fact that so many people will not give the Klitschko brothers any credit until they have retired and some paper chumps who have no interest in boxing one another have their belts in full knowledge that they are no match for either Klitschko brother.

In a few years there will be "I kinda miss Wlad" and "I kinda miss Vitali" threads by his present day haters, mark my words.

For sure. I just find it hard to make a mythical matchup with Fernando Montiel squaring off against Wladimir Klitschko. What size would Montiel be as a heavyweight? Would Klitschko be able to use his height and reach, or would Montiel be the same size as him?

Does Chad Dawson get faster when he is a welterweight against Floyd Mayweather Jr.? Or does Mayweather get slower fighting as a light heavyweight against Chad Dawson?

It's just tough to think about things in those terms.

The problem with the heavyweight division is that the Klitschkos have already beaten all the proven fighters. So now, they have to fight unproven undefeated fighters in their first step up fight... it ultimately dents their confidence when they lose every round, so then they lose to other upcoming prospects, and people don't have a lot of good things to say about the fighters they beat. It's also tougher for people to be respected after moving up, so that is another problem with the competition in the division.

I do have a ton of respect for the Chagaev win, and I think the Ibragimov win is underrated.

I will say that people do fairly criticize Ibragimov's resume, considering his biggest wins were 1000 year old Holyfield and Shannon Briggs who was on the brink of death in that fight.
