Now that cotto fought at 154 Vargas > Cotto

Vargas sparks him out in 8 at most! Vargas was a beast and would give Cotto a pounding. I think Vargas TKO him in 8 or makes him tak a knee. Even the version of Vargas that fought Mosley the first time beats Cotto. Vargas > Cotto...period! Some of you casual fans might not remember, but Vargas was the total package before he stepped into the ring at 22 to fight an ATG! Cotto at 22 vs that Vargas would have def been forced to a knee. Cotto vs Tito at 22?? Yea even u Cotto fans know how that go. He barely survived the Ricardo Torres assult. BTW I like both fighters, but decided to makes this thread, because they have similaritis and are always compared. Thoughts?

you may be right about Vargas winning at 154 but Fernando was for the most part a career Natural 154lber and cotto is most likely maxing out at this weight.

Vargas was a beast before the tito fight but Vargas couldnt even really hang with the biggest names in that division. when you look at losses against Tito, Oscar and even shane the first time( second fight Vargas was completely done)
and a very disputed win over Winky wright.

so Like i said, i think Vargas would win but lets not make Vargas out to be this all time great when he was only 26-5 with not too many huge wins

Vargas may have beaten Cotto head to head at 154, but he was NOT a better fighter.

vargas was a beast..just too young when he stepped up the competition..ala juan diaz..

I think it wouldve been a classic..easily one of the Top 10 fights of all time..but i think Cotto wouldve outboxed him..and out powered him.

and i ****ing love vargas..no ****..i was pissed for months when he lost to that *** DLH and even more mad when Tito wasnt DQ'd for those 4 low blows..i mean 2 warnings and 2 separate point deductions..bull****.

What a helluva fight it would be. Vargas only clear loss was DLH. Now that I think of it Vargas was really good at one point! I scored him slightly over Winks, that says a lot. Tito should've been Dq'd against Vargas, he was out and saved himself with a low blow, that fight still makes me mad. What heart Fernando had! My gut says Cotto however. Miguel has a tight defense, his weakness is speed and plaster. And he took plaster for 11 rounds before wilting. I think Cotto would outbox him for the first half before it became a dogfight and in the dogfight I favor Miguels bodywork to tire Fernando in 8-4 or 9-3 type fight. Vargas didn't have one punch power but power that wore opponents down.

I think there are only 2 real possibilities.

                1. Vargas puts on too much pressure and wears Cotto out late and gets a very late stoppage like 11th or 12th round in an action packed bout

                or

                2. Cotto outboxes him and lands the cleaner more effective blows and wins a Unanimous decision.

I would lean toward the second possibility but Vargas was such a huge dude that you never know.

As much as I disliked Vargas while he was active and as much as i like Cotto, I would have to say Vargas takes this one. He would have a considerable size advantage. Vargas had power and decent speed, but i think his best quality was his ability to adjust and adapt during a fight.

I do wonder how his chin would have held up during the fight though.

yeah him beating Winky was like whoa..Vargas was a boxer/puncher..but boxer 1st..people here saying he wouldve put on alot of pressure on Cotto is kinda like saying Mayorga is gonna outbox somebody..that wasnt Vargas's style..he boxed and if he felt the KO was there ..THEN the slugger would come out of him..but i think we wouldve seen a classic fight between the 2...so guys who can box with the best and arent afraid to trade in the middle...2 guys full of heritage and history..it wouldve been a top 10.
