  • Comments Thread For: Montiel vs Mijares Rumblings Continue For September

There are continued rumblings in Mexico that WBC/WBO bantamweight champion Fernando Montiel (43-2, 33KOs) is going to possibly defend his title in September against former champion Cristian Mijares (39-6-2, 17KOs). It's being reported that both fighters want to make the match. There are talks going on behind the scenes but it's not clear how serious they are.

Considering he may be between Hase and Donaire, this would be an EXTREMELY dangerous fight for Montiel. Mijares isn't shot and could very well have beaten Cermeno the first time. Intriguing.

****** move by Montiel if he is serious about fighting Donaire in november.

Mijares is no joke when he is mentally focuse.

I'd rather see Fernando go straight to a Donaire fight with no other bouts in between. But Mijares' lack of power would be his downfall against Montiel.

I disagree...it's the way a Champion SHOULD behave.

no this is a easy fight for montiel, mijares is shot... he strugle in his last 6 fights losing 3 of them.. many say he even lost his fight with panchito arce who hhas nno skills at all. Montiel is in a diferent level now he should put mijares to sleep early. Mijares doesnt have it anymore

I don't think it will happen. Cristian is still a big draw in Mexico but he's re-building his career now. And there are other people that want Montiel who are in a better negotiating position. Vic Darchinyan and Nonito Donaire want to fight Montiel and Arum has "promised" Donaire the fight. For what that's worth. You can never take Arum 100% seriously but I think that fight will happen. Arum has held back Donaire for too long. He needs to give him a big fight to keep him satisfied.

I thought Mijares was going back to 115? He can do well in that division now that the big names have moved up. Plus he was only 116 for his fight with Francisco Arce so he should still be able to make the weight.

Mijares is still very capable but he's not at the same level he was 3-4 years ago. Going into a fight with Montiel at this stage of his career is not a good idea. He should try and get a belt at 115 and go from there.

I don't think power is an issue. Your superior strength doesnt matter if the guy is hitting you twice or three times as much as you are hitting him. As alot of Mijares opponents have found out, Jorge Arce in particular.

If you asked me 3 years ago then I would have picked Mijares to win this fight. But right now he just needs to get some more wins to build up his confidence. If he suffered another loss (Especially if it was by KO) then it could ruin him. I think he should try and get an eliminator at 115. I don't see anyone at that weight class that he should be worried about.

While Mijares isn't shot, he isn't the fighter he once was. I don't really know why, but he's changed his style quite a bit starting with the Darchinyan fight, he's become a way more aggressive fighter and it's really taken him away from what made him one of the best fighters in the world. If Mijares fights with his counterpunching style he might be able to give Montiel a lot of trouble and might be able to get the upset but if he fights aggressive again, I think Montiel would knock him out.
