This was close and it was ugly. It doesn't take many seconds to realise that when you look at the punch statistics during AND after the fight. Low output percentage of clean shots.
It was close and no - no one was taken to school. The phrase "taken to school" is used too loosely around here. Nor Dawson or Pascal were being out-boxed. This wasn't a shut-out by far. It was a close and ugly fight were not many clean shots were landed. And no, it wasn't a robbery either.
I gave Pascal 4 out of 6 rounds in the first half. Pascal fought smart in the first half of the fight and knew where Dawson's head would be when he went forward. Dawson was leaning backwards to his left when pushed hard and he can't hit anything from that angle. Pascal worked on that. You also saw Pascal fight in flurries, equalling Dawson's speed, moving in and out like Pacquiao, just not as fluidly. Dawson has not met anyone who could equal him in speed before this fight. He had his hands to low for fighting in southpaw stance against a fighter who was as quick as him.
With that said, I still saw Dawson being way to passive and he had moments in the first half of the fight that he didn't really take advantage of - something that Pascal was good at when he stunned Dawson a couple of times. However, when moving to the second half I felt Dawson was taking more control of the fight by moving Pascal around the ring and got him on the ropes, threw 1-3 clean shots and....did nothing more. It was pretty clear to me that Pascal was tiring, even though he said it was intentional after the fight (which I don't believe), and you could see his footwork wasn't as coordinated as in the first half. He still fought smart though Dawson gave him way too much time to recover.
Dawson is the only one to blame for this loss - not taking anything away from Pascal, he did his job.
Chad was acting way to arrogant in the post fight interview after the loss. The stoppage was right and headbutts occur when a southpaw meets a conventional boxer.
Dawson was way to passive and that's the reason why he can't sell tickets I believe. He's a boxer foremost but he needs to go for the knock-out when he sees it. I don't think he could've KO'd Pascal but he could have stopped him on his feet if he continued to let his hands go.
