I would take a talented guy any day wit the hopes that you could coach him up. There are a lot of semi-talented guys with great boxing minds.....they are called trainers.
I also say talent because any great coach has confidence they can mold any fighter as long as they have the discipline/dedication to learn and be great.Comment

We have no better modern day example than Manny Pacquiao. He's not a dumb fighter but he isn't a boxing genius either. When Roach got him he had so much raw talent. With dedication and hard work (along with a great trainer) he became the fighter he is today.
On the flip side, there are tons of guys who know the sport inside and out but they fail because there lack of talent hinders them from being anything more than C-class boxers or opponents for other fighters. Roach was this way, so was Emmanuel Augustus and a bunch of other fighters.Comment

if you got the raw talent, the boxing mind will come with experience
so for me it's obviously raw talentComment

That's dumb. Put ****m Richardson, Roger Mayweather, or Freddie Roach in the ring right now they get their ass kicked. That's because you can be smart as you want-- it doesn't overcome Parkinson's disease, or being paralyzed, or being old, or not having physical talent.
Whereas you can be a crackhead like Zab Judah and still have a good career.Comment

I think if I can only have one or the other I'd choose the boxing brain, but if, say, I had to choose between exceptional athletic ability with medium boxing IQ and exceptional boxing IQ with medium athletic ability, I'd choose the athleticism. You often see thinkers meet their demise to guys who they just can't keep up with.Comment
