Afer heaing Amir Khan recently come out and say that he wants Marquez next as he's a bigger name than his mandatory Maidana and drop that tired old line 'boxing is a business' it made me think (and annoyed me) of how ts exactly this attitude from fighters and promoters that is killing the sport and in business term is shortsighted!
Us fans cry out for good competitive fights. The best fighting the best in their respective division. I understand that to get to the level Khan, Bradley etc are at they need a few fights to learn the trade and build up a fan base but it seems that all too often once these fighters get to a certain level and there is money to made, the essence of the sport is neglected to make a quick buck.
Am the only one who thinks that the more fighters fight in competitive fights the more people will come back to the sport which = consistently more money to be made for both the fighters and promoters? I thought promoters were business men?!?
It's this reason why the UFC has gained massive support and although events like the super 6 are good for boxing there just isn't enough competitive fights at the moment.
One of the main problems is peoples (fans, promoters, boxers) obsession with remaiing undefeated. Honestly who cares if a fighter loses? Boxing is about character, how they respond is more exciting imo and adds to the depth of competitve fighsts out there - a boxer loses once maybe twice and people think he's shot - it's sad and again killing the sport.
Let's hope for the good of the sport that promoter and fighters think long term instead of makng a short buck and then everyone will win.
