There's always two sides to a story and you've probably already read the cons of a Pacquiao-Margarito match-up in November. I for one am not a big fan of this fight, but truth be told, it doe have it's upsides which I intend to discuss in this column.
A fight between Manny Pacquiao and Antonio Margarito rekindles the friendly competitive rivalry between the Philippines and Mexico. Pacquiao, who once was called the 'Mexicutioner', has become a crossover superstar in Mexico after his epic wars with the country's best fighters like Marco Antonio Barrera, Erik Morales and Juan Manuel Marquez. Margarito not too long ago was Mexico's biggest superstar and more beloved champion. Despite falling from grace because of his illegal hand wraps fiasco, a chance to see a Mexican warrior defeat the Filipino icon is something the rabid Mexican boxing fans won't dare miss.
Pacquiao-Margarito will not be boring. Both guys fight the same way and that's to come forward and throw punches. Margarito's punches should hit as hard as Clottey's (unless he's been on the plaster all his life) and will come way more often. Pacquiao will have a ****er in front of him like David Diaz, except that this guy is bigger, taller and punches harder.
Top Rank promoter Bob Arum might actually regain some of his years back if he successfully pulls this fight off. This in-house promoted card would mean more greenbacks and less chance of a heart attack for Arum since he does not have to deal with the difficulties of negotiating with other promoters. It also means more money for Pacquiao too!
This fight also proves that in boxing, there's such a thing as a second chance. So what if Margarito could've significantly damaged and opponent like how Luis Resto did against the promising Billy Collins Jr. with his loaded gloves? In boxing, if you are promoted by the big dogs, you might get a slap on the hand for cheating, but you will get a second chance. Just look at Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. who is now all of a sudden the darling of boxing again after getting caught with an agent that “masks/hides” the use of steroids after his win over Troy Rowland on the Manny Pacquiao-Miguel Cotto card.
A victory over Margarito might land Pacquiao an 8th divisional belt- something, some of his die-hard fans seem to crave. And by beating Margarito, the forum nuts can also go crazy because they can say Pacquiao beat a guyFloyd Mayweather Jr. 'ducked'.
