    Cotto Vs. Mayweather Rumors!!??...

There has been some buzz of late on a possible Floyd Mayweather-Miguel Cotto fight.

"A fight between Miguel and Floyd will be great for the sport and exciting for the fans around the world," Bryan Perez, executive director of Promociones Miguel Cotto, told *********.com. "Mayweather only has to say "yes' to the challenge."

    I don't think so.

It might be a great fight for Bryan Perez, but not for either Mayweather or Cotto. No. 1, I don't think Cotto could beat Mayweather on Cotto's best night. Cotto couldn't cope with Manny Pacquiao's speed and Mayweather, if not as fast as Pacquiao, is very close to it.

And why would Cotto, having just regained respect in the boxing world with this impressive destruction of Yuri Foreman, risk another humiliating loss? It makes no sense.

Mayweather, meanwhile, has been given some slack for not committing to a Pacquiao fight at this juncture because of the uncertainty of having uncle/trainer Roger Mayweather in his corner due to legal problems. Roger Mayweather is facing assault charges stemming from an altercation with a female boxer last year). But by taking a fight with Cotto, Floyd would be blowing a hole in that alibi.

It had looked like the last hurdle to what would be the biggest fight since Sugar Ray Leonard and Marvin Hagler had been cleared when Pacquiao agreed to Olympic style blood testing, but there was no response from Mayweather, who appears to have painted himself into a corner. Any fight Mayweather takes now, other than Pacquiao, is going to look like he's ducking the Pacman.

At this point, Mayweather has more to lose by not fighting Pacquiao than he would by losing to Pacquiao in a competitive fight, and I'm certain this would be a very competitive fight, regardless of who wins.

It could be, too, that Mayweather is stalling, waiting for some indication that Pacquiao is slipping a little, in either speed or motivation. Remember how Leonard played with Hagler's head?

Keeping Hagler and the whole boxing world in suspense, Leonard finally announced on television that the fight "is not going to happen" — he was staying retired. Then when Hagler had just about made up his mind to retire after a tough fight with John "The Beast" Mugabi, Leonard announced he was coming out of retirement to fight Hagler.

Pacquiao, however, has indicated through trainer Freddie Roach that he's only going to have two more fights, and he's meeting Antonio Margarito Nov. 13. So the hourglass is almost empty.

But I still have a hard time believing this fight won't happen at some point. It's just too damn big.
