Nonito Donaire doesn’t mind playing a cameo role as long as Manny Pacquiao is the lead character of the show.
“I have requested that I be included in Manny’s undercard,” Donaire, the interim World Boxing Association (WBA) super-flyweight titlist told the PSA Forum on Tuesday.
Pacquiao is booked to fight on November 13 against Antonio Margarito and Donaire wants no less than a cameo appearance underneath in an effort to get maximum exposure since the fight of Pacquiao has always been a blockbuster.
Donaire mentioned Fernando Montiel of Mexico as his main target but it would be all up to Top Rank chief Bob Arum, who promotes both fighters.
Fresh from stopping Hernan ‘Tyson’ Marquez of Mexico in San Juan, Puerto Rico, Donaire is dying to get it on with Montiel, who holds the WBA and World Boxing Organization bantam belts.
Accompanied by wife Rachel, Donaire admits to feeling bothered that he has yet to engage in a super showdown even though he’s been fighting under Arum’s banner the past two years.
“It’s frustrating but if the Montiel fight doesn’t happen, there are other big fights out there,” said Donaire. ‘But I would really love my next fight to be in the undercard of a Pacquiao fight.”
In a conversation with The Bulletin just before Donaire faced the media, Arum assured the California-based puncher that Top Rank has grand plans for him although it doesn’t look like Arum is keen in having him underneath the Pacquiao headliner.
“Tell him, we’re trying to finalize the details of his fight with Montiel and that we have plans of seeing him fight (Guillermo) Rigondeaux at 122 lbs next year,” said Arum, revealing that his company has just signed up the talented Cuban.
Arum, however, wants the Donaire-Montiel duel to take place on December 4, underneath the proposed world super-welterweight battle between Miguel Cotto of Puerto Rico and Julio Cesar Chavez.
