Comments Thread For: Opportunity Finally Knocking For Devon Alexander

By Jake Donovan - With all else being equal, the difference between a great fighter and a superstar often comes down to being given the opportunity to shine.

It was evident the first time you saw Devon Alexander fight – no matter which fight it was for you – that he was destined for greatness. Belts would come for sure, but would the money and the fame follow, you had to wonder?

A win over Andriy Kotelnik this weekend will provide an emphatic “yes” as the answer to all of that.

It’s not so much this specific fight – a unified title defense against that weekend that makes or breaks his career. But it’s important to Alexander for a number of reasons.

For starters, it’s his first time playing the lead in a homecoming performance, as he heads back to St. Louis – and the Scottrade Center in particular - for a unified title defense against Andriy Kotelnik (Saturday, HBO, 10PM ET/PT).

The fight itself represents an opportunity for Alexander (20-0, 13KO) to once again showcase his skills in front of an HBO-televised audience. It comes on the heels of his network debut five months ago, when he looked fantastic (as usual) in blasting out normally iron-chinned Juan Urango in eight rounds.

With the win came his second major title in as many fights, becoming a unified titlist and for the first time in his career gaining recognition as one of the premiere talents in the division. [Click Here To Read More]

Alexander doesn't strike me as having the charisma to become a superstar, he'll probably become one of those fighters who the fight fans know is really good but the general public won't have heard much of.

I agree with that statement. Out of all the top guys at 140 he's the only one with no weaknesses, but based off of his charisma and decisions in the ring, I don't think he has what it takes to be a star. I always said he'd end up like Shane Mosley. Even after legtimately beating De La Hoya, he still never became the face of boxing. Even if he beats Bradley, Khan, Maidana, and Ortiz, he lacks that star power that Bradley and Kahn have, and Ortiz had.

I've been watching this kid for a while now. I'm extremely happy to see where he has gone thus far in his young career. The WHOLE St. Louis is pulling for Devon. Saturday is going down...St. Louis will be in the building!
