Pacquiao - Margarito IS relevant historically

Pacquiao - Margarito IS relevant historically. When the smoke clears, we will have a better idea of who was the best welterweight of this era. Listed below are my top 5 welterweights of the last few years. I did not include Paul Williams due to the fact that hasn't fought at welterweight since 2008.

    1. Floyd Mayweather
    2. Manny Pacquiao
    3. Miguel Cotto
    4. Shane Mosley
    5. Antonio Margarito

Cotto beats Mosley, Margarito beats Cotto, Mosley beats Margarito, Mayweather beats Mosley. If you follow the logic of 'the man who beat the man who beat the man' then right now Floyd Mayweather is the linear welterweight champion.

Now here is things get dicey. Floyd has only fought twice since 2007. During this period of relative inactivity, Manny Pacquiao assumed the role of boxing's best pound for pound with decisive victories over Delayhoya, Hatton, Cotto, and Clottey. A victory over Margarito will add to the legacy of Pacquiao.

I prefer actual matchups vs. hypothetical ones. We won't have to ask what if regarding this generation of welterweights should the winner fight Mayweather and the loser fights Cotto or Mosley. The top guys will have all faced one another in the ring.
