...so i was planning on just streaming it but i'm a sucker...i called up a couple of buddies, got some beer, ordered pizza and ordered the $60 ppv
overall it wasn't a bad card...but probably the best thing that could have happened was someone tripping over HBO's power cord and us being able to see some of the undercard bouts;
Frankie Gomez- this is the 2nd time i've seen the kid and he's got some star potential...granted, he's young and being fed tomato cans, you can see that he's ready to explode at any time in a fight...i'd like to see this steady diet of journeymen as he polishes his game and maybe by the end of next year, have him take a slight step up
here's a little tidbit, since they both beat up on Ronnie Peterson, it got me to thinking; if brought along, groomed and marketed properly how about a showdown with Benavidez in a couple of years? could be dynamite between those two
Sakio Bika vs Mendy: poor Mendy...he look like he got hit by a baseball bat...i agree with the call...he was clearly down and Bika gave him a nasty cheapshot...unlike Dirrell, Mendy was REALLY hurt...the way he was trying JUST TO GET ON that stool showed the level of his wooziness
too bad, HBO cut right back to their telecast...i would have liked to see more replays of that foul
onto the actual card....
Linares vs Juarez: i dont know about you guys but seeing Rocky on ppvs just pisses me off nowadays...we already know that he's gonna throw 3 punches a round then try to rally in the end...in between, we'll hear his corner pleading with him to get more busy
Linares is highly skilled...great handspeed and IMO he has a brilliant jab...fast, accurate, busy, consistent...he also has tremendous footwork...but maybe too good for my liking..i understand Rocky still has 1-punch power that could end a fight but there really wasn't much need for him to run around THAT much...i like Linares...good boxer, but i dont see much charisma
Guerrero vs Casamayor- after 4 rounds, me and my buds decided that this was the fight to smoke a couple more bowls, recharge and have a cigarette break to. what a ****ty ass fight...really...im glad Lacy is doing well now but im tired of hearing about her story while her husband puts on another lackluster performance...i'm sure the Guerreros are nice people but along with Casamayor, lets all pray that last night was the last time we see them on a ppv. That fight was the textbook definition of a glorified sparring session...the highlight was Guerrero getting put on his ass by a jab...yawn
and now my favorite fight of the night
Pirog vs Jacobs: DAAAAAAAAAAAAMN...there is a new player at 160 and its a 'slick russian'
i dont think i've ever seen someone from that part of the globe move like that...he had Jacobs befuddled from the beginning...the dude was using a shoulder roll as a shield to get inside and ****...this guy was VERY entertaining...and that last shot...WOW...that came from a double feint ending with a right that Jacobs had no clue was coming...once it landed, Jacobs folded like a lawnchair
out of the entire card, the one fighter i NEED to see again is Pirog
onto the main event
Marquez-Diaz: it was good to see Juan Diaz get his ass picked apart...he tried to box JMM like an idiot and got dissected...JMM saw every adjustment Diaz made and adapted...it was a solid display of boxing fundamentals by JMM and it got the job done...it was more workmanlike than spectacular but like Casamayor, i hope last night was enough and that's the last time we see Diaz
i'd like JMM to go on and take an Amir Khan fight next...if he wins, it would add even more luster back to his name and maybe...just maybe we can get that 3rd fight with PAC
after PAC dispatches Margarito, it would be nice for PAC and JMM to fight at 147, to end both of their careers in 2011
overall, the card wasn't worth the tag but i was feening for some boxing and it did the job...let's all hope GBP puts Pirog on their next ppv
