    Alvarez's choices at WW

Since Hatton would rather fight Senchenko (which is a smart choice because he'd just be a stepping stone for Canelo), let's take a look at Alvarez's choices. And these aren't only fights for September. He could, and should face these guys anytime.

Richard Gutierrez: A pretty solid veteran. He's been in there with some great names like Clottey, Angulo and Abregu. He went the distance with two of those three, and Angulo was a completely mismatch so of course he got KO'ed there. This would be a good test for Alvarez.

David Estrada: Another solid veteran. I made a thread about this fight earlier. It would be a dangerous fight for Canelo, and a great test. Estrada has been in there with great names like Mosley, Berto, Cintron and Abregu. In my opinion he was robbed in the Abregu fight, and he's coming off of an impressive KO victory.

Luis Carlos Abregu: This is probably one of those few guys he should stay away from for a little big longer. That right hand is capable of putting Canelo on his ass if he isn't careful. Maybe in late 2011 this fight would make sense. Plus Abregu is coming off of a loss, so it wouldn't be as good. But if Canelo were to beat him, then he'd certainly prove that he's good.

Irving Garcia: The Monte Barrett of the WW division LOL this would be an easy fight for Canelo, and a decent name on his resume. It wouldn't prove very much, but it would at least get him started. In fact, I think this would be a great choice for him in September as long as he fights some of the other names next year.

Henry Bruseles: This would be a big step up too. Bruseles has been in the ring with Floyd Mayweather, and also gave Mike Jones a good fight and went the distance with him. A win over him, especially if its a KO would certainly prove a lot.

Antonio Diaz: Another veteran, and a decent name. He's been in there with everyone. Margarito, Mosley, Victor Ortiz, Cory Spinks, etc. I'd expect Alvarez to knock him out easily, especially after seeing what Ortiz did to him last year.

Junior Witter: I heard Witter is moving up, and this would be another great test. He's capable of outboxing Alvarez. He was able to somewhat outbox Bradley and Alexander, but Bradley's workrate and right hand and Alexander's size and power won the fight for them. This would test how Alvarez would do against a slick counter puncher, even though Witter is past his prime.

Alfonso Gomez: I'd really like to see this fight happen. Even though Gomez's best wins are over fighters with no pulse, he is a good name at WW and has been in the ring with Cotto. Unfortunately, I can't see Top Rank allowing this to happen.

Delvin Rodriguez: Even though he was robbed last night, he'll rebound. And when he does, this fight needs to happen. Rodriguez put Abregu on his ass and went the distance with him. I really wish he hadn't gotten robbed, because this would have been a great fight for September.

Honestly I haven't seen anything special in Alvarez yet. Hopefully he'll display some sort of championship pedigree soon.

Did you see his last fight against Cuello? He looked pretty impressive. He showed that he can punch. And he may not have looked amazing against Cotto, but he did show good movement and he did manage to land some good shots that Cotto didn't see coming at all, for example the uppercut that dropped him in round 2 or 3. He should work on his defense a bit more though, so he doesn't get caught with another shot like the one Cotto landed on him. If a WW like Abregu were to land that, he'd probably put Alvarez to sleep.

Damn, they chose Baldomir...I don't wanna see that crap. I'd rather see him beat up Irving Garcia than fight Baldomir. The guy should have retired after he lost to Forrest...

I didn't put him on the list because I highly doubt GBP would make that fight anytime soon. And I don't blame them either. But I think that would be a competitive fight. Jones struggles against guys who can box, and I think Alvarez would struggle against a puncher.

But I disagree about Berto. He may have little to no boxing skills, but his speed and power would be too much for Alvarez at this point. In a few years I'd certainly pick him over Berto though.
