Comments Thread For: Jacobs vs Pirog: CompuBox Analysis and Prediction

Danny Jacobs (20-0, 17 KO) is favored to capture the vacant WBO middleweight title against Russian Dmitry Pirog (16-0, 13 KO), but whatever the result the numbers indicate an exciting and explosive contest.

Pirog's biggest problem based on watching several of his fights is that he thinks he's slicker than what he is. He may have been able to get away with it against lesser competition but against someone as talented and fast as Jacobs, I don't think he'll be able to. Pirog likes to employ the shoulder roll defense and does o.k. with it (avoids a lot of left hooks), but he isn't exactly fast and he has a bad habit of moving straight back. He also has a bad habit of resetting his feet and squaring his feet up while right in front of his opponent and I see that being a problem for him as he faces guys who are faster than him and can take advantage of that flaw.

One of the things that Pirog does really well is move his upperbody. He does slip a good amount of punches but he definitely is not a counter-puncher. Even though he is 29, he still seems somewhat green in certain areas. Pirog is more of a pot-shotter than anything else; although he can rip off some good combos when he's on the inside. He doesn't really utilize his jab much, but he throws the uppercut with both hands pretty well and he also throws hooks to the body with both hands pretty well. I would say those are his best and most effective punches. I think his greatest assets are his conditioning and the fact that he stays really active for the entire round. There is no lull in the action whatsoever, so, whoever fights him better be in top-notch condition.

Another one of the things I noticed about Pirog is that he is kinda dirty. He likes to hit on the break, use his left shoulder/forearm/elbow to back his opponent up. So, it really wouldn't surprise me to see him fight Daniel dirty; especially if Danny boy starts getting the better of him.

I won't go into great detail about Jacobs since a lot of us are already familiar with him. I will say though as it relates to this fight that I think his bread and butter in this fight is his 1-2 combo. I don't think Pirog will respond well to the speed at which Danny throws his it. I can easily see Pirog moving straight back and getting floored just like Jose Varela did when he fought Jacobs.

The most intriguing aspect of this fight is that both guys throw good to great body punches. I would love nothing more than to see this fight be a body war of sorts. Danny rips the left hook to the body as well as anyone in the sport and he gets guys out of there with it. It's fast, he sets it up well, and it apparently hurts. Pirog throws good hooks to both sides, but obviously doesn't have the speed that Danny has.

I think to make things easier for Jacobs, he needs to keep this fight on the outside and only come inside when he's on offense. I do not think he should be taking any time off offensively when he's on the inside with Pirog because this is when Pirog will be able to do his best work. For Pirog, it is absolutely critical for him to get on the inside as much as possible so that he can throw his hooks to the body and uppercuts. If I'm him, I try and make it a dirty fight. I just don't see him fairing well on the outside with Jacobs at all.

All these writers keep getting over on saying how big of a step up in class this is for Pirog, but not for Jacobs.

The only recognizable names on Jacobs resume are Mike Walker and Ishe Smith and maaaaaybe Varela.

Pirog beat Jantuah, Tatesoyvan and Tongonboyev.

THey act like Jacobs has been fighting killers and whatnot.

BOTH guys are taking steps up.

I slightly favor Jacobs but am a bit ignorant about Pirog's style.

                Yep I noticed that BS.
Its a step up for both men yet apparently Jacobs has been in with greats while Pirog has been fighting cab drivers

I finally got around to watching some Pirog fights and I picked up on a lot of what you did.

Jacobs has several advantages in this fight such as speed, power, and size and I think speed in particular will be a big factor in this fight. I think we might find out tonight that Pirog isn't as slick as people thought when he's in there against someone who isn't a tailor made opponent who's either slower, smaller, and/or stationary.

I think Jacobs will win the first half of the fight comfortably if it makes it that long because I have a feeling that Pirog is going to get his chin tested early on either with a counter punch over a slow jab or right hand or maybe hit with a right hand while in that shoulder roll posture that may be set up with a jab or a left hook, right-hand combo that he throws sometimes and I've seen Pirog hit with this same combination more then once.

If the fight goes into the second half I think Pirog might start to gain momentum but likely won't be enough.

Jacobs has his own flaws too such as being open to left hooks and can be countered over top of his jab with a right because he doesn't always pull his left hand back to his face. I just don't see Pirog as the guy to really exploit Jacobs' defensive mistakes.

Finally, an x-factor in this fight could be the passing of his grandmother last who he shared a close relationship with. We've seen time and time again where someone puts on a career defining performance when they feel they are fighting for someone who may have recently passed.

What a fight this is? a great fight for boxing.

I think Jacobs should be too fast for him and should be able to win more rounds in an entertaining distance fight.
