We all know which were the great fights this year (Barrera-Morales, Marquez-Pacquaio, etc.), but if our proud sport is going to improve its reputation, we must be honest and vocal about the shadiness that still exists. Here are some of my nominees for the Most Bogus Moments of 2004:
- The decision for Brewster vs. Meehan: It took the judges nearly 5 minutes to tabulate the scorecards, and while this was going on, Don King went to Meehan's corner and told the Thunder from Down Under that he put on a "Good Show." For those who have seen DK in action for some time, you already know that "Good Show" translates into "You should get the decision, but the fight is fixed, so good luck next time!"
- Freitas quits before the "over" goes through: It's too bad that one of the most competitive fights all year was marred by an over/under wager, but when Acelino looked over to the clock, then said "No Mas," 6 SECONDS before the cut-off for the over/under bet, not only did he become a quitter, but he tainted his reputation as an honest, hard-working champion. (Last year's award in this area went to Yori Boy Campas' corner in the DeLaHoya fight, only their crew went with the over rather than the under.)
- I don't even have to comment on the Courtney Burton-Emmanuel Augustus match, Teddy Atlas said it all.
