I really believe boxing will abandon the PPV model in the next few years.

I think that boxing promoters are actually starting to realize how much PPV fights are shrinking their fan base. I would not be surprised if they strike up a deal with a network like TNT or USA that is on basic cable in the next few years. What do you all think?

It would be awesome and bring boxing back to its roots and that meaning back to being a sport over a business. Gone will be the days of fighters making 30 million dollars but in the long run would help the growth of the sport and undercard fighters will see a slight increase in pay across the board as well.

Whether this deters fighters from boxing because the major lucrative fights would bring in less money would be interesting but in the long run I think it would help big time and maybe the sport could gain in popularity where you could see a major network start to show big time fights again. I think boxing may end up going down this path but it is going to take a lot longer than a few years.

The reason I made this thread was because the thread you made about how you are done buying PPV's and I thought how ridiculous it really is to buy these fights.

          No, dude. I disagree.

We will see more PPV's. Not less.

never happen....the top fighters want so much money that the ppv is the only way to make it all happen for the purses, and such.

More importantly, the networks are undergoing margin pressure, and they need to reduce their budgets and risk,

A ppv is less risk for the networks. It's ideal for them. Minimal expenditure, but if it hits, their affiliates make out big.

The network doesn't pay a big license fee. Instead, they can opt to buy the rebroadcast and foreign rights.

I wish that were true, but unfortunately, it's not.
You need a lot of advertising dollars to make this work, and companies aren't exactly lining up to give it to people.

Boxing is a fringe sport. And fringe sports don't see major sponsors.

I wish it weren't true, but it's been proven time and again with boxing.

Do you honestly think any sport would have a ppv model if they didn't have to do it?
