I'm not mad at Arum. I'm really not.
Yeah, I have been talking **** about the prospective Pacquiao-Margarito fight, but that's only because it rattles the peasants (and they're so feeble-minded, aren't they?). In reality, what Bob Arum is saying is true. From a business standpoint: why should he give other promoters' fighters a free ride on Pac's coattails.
Pac/Arum has made it to the big time with smarts, hard work, boxing talent and a bit of luck (yeah, and steroids and catchweights, too). Why should Arum put his diamond at risk against some fighter whose promoter failed to properly invest in him? Arum acknowledges that Pac-Marg or Pac-Cotto 2 is unappealing to many...but it is the smart business play. I agree with him.
The question is , why didn't Slippery Bob apply that same logic when Floyd had hit the big time, and 'Ole Bob was trying to give Margarito a free ride on Floyd's coattails. Yeah, same situation. At the time, Arum had done NOTHING to promote Tony. Arum mentioned that Shaw puts his fighters in "Indian casinos". Well, when Arum wanted to offer Floyd a fight, Margarito had just come off selling 25K PPV buys in a half-filled room at - wait for it - The Aladdin. Indian casinos laugh at the Aladdin.
Bob had "offered" Floyd an $8 million purse? Well, I'm sure that Goossen or Shaw would gladly "Offer" Pacquiao $10 million to face Williams or Timmy. Hell, King would "offer" $15 million to face Devon.
So, it's good to see that Arum has learned a thing or two from Floyd. Who said you can't teach an old dog new tricks?
