According to Boxrec, Wright will fight on November 5th against a yet to be determined opponet. Who might it be?
It seems at this point in time, Winky is not concerned about winning world titles, he wants the big money fights. Because of that, he really doesn't belong to a certain weight class. I think he would fight anyone from 154-168. Some possible big money opponents:
1 - Oscar de la Hoya. De la Hoya is everyone's big money fight, but he has mentioned Winky by name as a possible opponent for 2006. The only problem with that is De la Hoya has targeted May for his next fight, which means it would come a year after Winky's most recent fight. I think Winky should fight someone later this year.
2 - Felix Trinidad rematch. It would be a big money fight because it features Tito and the guy who destroyed him, but I don't think Tito wants to do it and I do not think it would do as well in PPV sales as the first fight did. However, a rematch with Tito would still pocket Winky more money than almost anyone else.
3 - Bernard Hopkins. If Hopkins beats Taylor, a Hopkins-Wright fight for the undisputed middleweight championship would probably do more PPV sales than the upcoming Hopkins-Taylor fight, but Hopkins doesn't seem interested in this fight at all. If Hopkins wins, expect him to move on to fight Antonio Tarver or Roy Jones Jr.
4 - Ricardo Mayorga. Mayorga has a pretty big following and his fights are always worth the price of admission. However Mayorga has a bout scheduled for August 13th and then is rumored to be fighting Fernando Vargas later this year. In other words, he seems to be booked. Also I am not convinced that a Mayorga-Wright bout would turn out any different than the Tito-Wright did.
5 - Jeff Lacy. I know this may seem like a reach considering that Winky has only fought one bout at middleweight after spending most of his career at 154. However, both of these guys are pretty well known and could generate some buzz if they decided to fight. The only problem is would this fight come at 160 or 168? Lacy has a bout in August, and could be free later this year.
6 - Jermain Taylor. If Taylor is able to beat Hopkins on Saturday night, especially if he can KO him, he will become a draw. A Taylor-Wright fight for the undisputed middleweight title would probably be able to get some PPV buys. However even if Taylor is able to beat Hopkins, his next bout will be a rematch with Bernard later this year.
7 - Fernando Vargas. Vargas is still a name and could generate some money, plus there is the storyline of Wright trying to avenge one of his losses. However Vargas poses the same problem as Mayorga does in that he looks to be booked for the rest of the year.
Really, out of these possibilities the only one that looks like it could happen this year is the Jeff Lacy bout, and I really don't even know if that is a very realistic scenario right now. Winky may be forced to take a "stay busy" fight later this year in preparation for a big money fight or two next year.
