I know a lot of hardcore JMM and Morales fans hate him (which I like Morales the best out of the three). Someone made a thread about Pacquiao asking which was the last prime fighter he fought. Of course people are gonna say Barrera and I agree. That's why I gotta give the guy his props for going through with that fight with the kind of distractions he had like the numerous times he had to go to the doctor with the metal plate in his head and perservering through his training camp getting burned down even though he got dominated by Pac that night.
Here's the things I have to give Barrera credit for:
1. Going after a better opponent than Morales did for the fourth title (even though I don't view Soto as an elite fighter).
2. Fighting with that big ass gash across his head against Khan on hostile territory nontheless.
3. Always coming back from devastating losses with a ****.
4. Going after a fourth title period (and I think Soto might be better than Khan for all we know).
These are the things he did toward the end of his career which made me overlook the good stuff he did like:
1. Sucker punching Morales at the press conference
2. Fighting safety first fights against Pac in the rematch and with skinned gloves against Juarez.
3. Hitting JMM while he was down and turning down the rematch when everybody wanted to see it since the fight was competitive and action packed.
4. And I guess I never got won over by Barrera as a hardcore fan because of the rich background he came from unlike a lot of other great Mexican fighters.
But all in all, I think his qualities as a boxer overshadow the shady ones. He gets props from me ultimately.
