Comments Thread For: Montiel Tears Through Concepcion, Braces For Donaire

By Jake Donovan - Unified titlist Fernando Montiel continues to plead his case as the best bantamweight on the planet, dominating late replacement Rafael Concepcion en route to a stoppage at 1:07 of the third round Saturday evening at Palenque de la Feria in Tuxtla Gutierrez, Chiapas, Mexico.

Both fighters weighed in at the divisional limit of 118 lb. for the main event, which aired live on Fox Sports Espanol.

The bout was Montiel’s first since traveling to Japan less than three months ago to score a shocking upset over Hozumi Hasegawa. The win earned Montiel the distinction of becoming the division’s first unified champion since the title became splintered more than three decades ago.

Fighting in his native Mexico, Montiel’s first defense of the unified titles was to come against mandatory challenger Eric Morel. That fight fell apart when Morel pulled up lame, claiming an injured leg in abruptly pulling out of the bout earlier this month.

In came Concepcion, whom Top Rank had scheduled to appear on the card in the event that Morel would find a way to back out of the fight.

What resulted was a rout, not that Montiel’s countryman in attendance seemed to mind, wildly cheering every punch thrown by one of the very best to come out of the boxing rich town of Los Mochis, Mexico. [Click Here To Read More]

Montiel I hope is making his way onto the P4P lists because this guy is serious. He has been for awhile now. His resume is looking pretty sharp(not including Concepcion on it).

Donaire's gonna meet his match in this one. he's been fighting low rated boxers after Darchinyan. Montiel's gonna win this one

Montiel is #7 on the only p4p list that matters

I don't get this 'Donaire been fighting bums' argument - maybe it's true about the opponents, but the first world class operator he faced he KO'd spectacularly. What more can he do?

                  Donaire is a joke!

I'm a proud filipino but Donaire is still nothing but a hype-job so far. How difficult is it to defeat opponents when you're a foot taller than them? Donaire and Manny are the same height and at 27 years old, Manny was already fighting at superfeatherweight while this fool is still fighting midgits at 115. What a joke! Donaire does show talent and skill but until he starts getting in the ring with guys his size, I'll never become a believer.

Here's my other beef with Donaire. Who the hell did he sleep with to get ranked in the P4P list above guys like Juan Manuel Lopez, Miguel Cotto, or even Shane Mosley? Are you freakin kidding me? Especially, Juanma Lopez, who is not only undefeated, but has knocked out so many legit contenders (i.e. Penalosa, De Leon, Luevano, Concepcion, etc)

Skill wise Donaire has it and is one of the better fighters out there. Does he have the chin? is the question @ the higher weight classes because he does get hit. He will take the best bombs @ 115, 118, 122 from the likes of guys like Montiel but when he moves up to Juan Ma, Gamboa, R. Marquez territory, we will see what he is made of.
