In a present time of repeating mismatches, bogus titles, unrecognized champions and numerous “Bum of a month” tours (akin some of Joe Louis’s journeys but maybe even worse than them) a collision of two highly-ranked up-and-comers is a rare occurrence. A clash between two former amateur stars, fighting on a narrow slope to a mountain peak is doubly as seldom. And when you throw in their nationalities and find out that both of them are actually Russians, you can count it as one-in-a-year (and that’s being a generous estimate) type of event. Great article, thanks for the post.
I remember reading about how Lebedev had retired after having a rough time with promoters, managers etc when he first went pro. He quit, was working a regular job, struggling to support his family and Povetkin helped get him back into boxing. Sasha encouraged him to give it another try, hooked him up with a trainer and everything, it really made me respect Povetkin as a person hearing what he did for Denis.
Alekseev is a bit more mobile than either Klychko and has some of the best body punching in the sport, he reminds me of Jirov a bit. I absolutely love watching his style.
The article didn't mention Frenkel who is also a great CW up and comer.
Even when CW had guys like Jirov, Gomez, Haye, Bell, Mormek, Adamek still no one watched. Currently CW has alot of top talent but for whatever reason most people still spew their uninformed and prejudice "CW sucks" bull****. I'll never understand why that division is invisible for most.
Can't wait for this fight.
