Sergio Mora:I would love to fight Miguel Cotto

    By Ricardo Conde

Former WBC junior middleweight champion Sergio “The Latin Snake” Mora (22-1-1, 6 KOs) of Los Angeles, CA will step back into the ring on Saturday, September 18 against four-time world champion “Sugar” Shane Mosley (46-6, 39 KOs) of Pomona, CA at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, CA in a 12-round junior middleweight bout and will be televised live on pay-per-view which is being presented by Golden Boy Promotions. We had a moment to sit down and talk to Sergio Mora about his upcoming fight with Shane Mosley and here’s what he had to say.

You were originally scheduled to face Juan Carlos Candelo on July 23, but now that fight has been canceled. What was your reaction upon learning that instead you’ll be facing four time world champion Shane Mosley in September at the Staples Center?

Well, it was exciting because that’s a bigger fight and bigger arena and its probably going to be the biggest fight of my career. I hate canceling fights because it’s happened to me before but this was a big opportunity and Golden Boy didn’t want me to take the chance of getting cut or injured in the fight with Candelo and wanted me to go straight into this big fight.

Do you feel Mosley will be the toughest fight of your career so far?

We’re going to see September 18; I would expect him to be.

Shane Mosley is a tremendous fighter and has fought some of the best fighters in the world; give us your thoughts on this fight and your opinion of him?

Well, I know him really, really well; I’ve known him for a long time actually, since I was an amateur. We are actually some what friends. He’s a legend in the sport, one of the best fighters in our era, always comes to fight, a lot of speed, a lot of guts and it’s going to be a great fight for the fans.

Have you begun training camp and will you be doing anything different in this camp that you haven’t done for your previous fights?

We’ve started training. We work hard every camp, certain fights motivate you more and this is the biggest fight of my career so obviously I know that I have to work hard and be ready for anything and everything.

You’ll be fighting in your hometown of Los Angeles, CA. What does it mean to you to be fighting in front of thousands of people at the Staples Center; do think there is going to be any added pressure for you to have a great performance?

Well, I’ve already fought at the Staples Center before and I’ve had 10,000 people come and support me then and Shane Mosley has fought there numerous times and he’s had over 10,000 people go and support him so I feel its just going to be a great event, on a great weekend and styles make fights and this fight is definitely going to be something special, I’m excited about it, I’m not nervous at all.

What kind of statement are you looking to make in your fight with Shane Mosley?

A big one, definitely a big one because Shane Mosley has beaten pretty much every Latin fighter he’s faced especially at the Staples Center so its a big weekend for Mexicans, being so close to Mexican Independence Day, so I plan on making a big statement and have a great night for the Latin people.

Before your fight with Calvin Green you hadn’t fought for over a year and a half; do think that having been out of the ring for so long had any affect on you during that fight?

I think it did but I had almost four camps because I had scheduled fights. So once I got that rust off with Green, I mean I got hit, I got cut and I won on a knockout so I think I shook all my rust off and I’m ready to go into September.

In your opinion who do you feel has been your toughest opponent to date and why?

“The Viper” Vernon Forrest, twenty four rounds with him because it was more mental than physical with him. I’ve had physical fights but the fight with him was all mental because he knew every trick, cagey and he punched hard.

You have a very tough assignment on September 18, but should you get past Mosley, who would you like to face in the near future?

Well, right after Mosley I would like the biggest possible names at either junior middleweight or middleweight but to throw a name out there, I would love to fight Miguel Cotto because he’s the newly crowned champion at 154 and I feel we would make a great match up at that weight and Puerto Rico against Mexico would be a big Latin event.

You are now signed with Oscar De La Hoya’s, Golden Boy Promotions, tell us a little bit about that and how you feel it has helped your career?

Well, it’s definitely helping my career because I’ve never really been with a promoter. I signed with The Contender for five years and before that I would just get fights on my own so now that I’m with a promoter it’s going to keep me active. I’m finally going to be a real fighter that’s active, motivated and fighting consistently

Is there anything you would like to tell your fans?

I have a lot, a lot of faithful fans on www.sergiomora.net, the snake pit. I just want to thank everybody that’s supported me but especially them. I got a lot of people to shut, a lot of critics to shut up and I got a lot to prove. So I’m excited about September 18, and viva la raza.

Theres a good chance mora could upset mosley imo.But i doubt a
cotto-mora fight ever happens.Danny jacobs against mora seems
      more likely.

Of course he would. Who wouldn't want to make a million bucks for one fight, especially when you're used to making chump change. HBO won't waste their time on Mora so it ain't happening.

Sorry Sergio, Your promoted by Golden Boy meaning you don't have the priveledge of fighting any Top Rank fighters. Mr Arum will continue to keep all of the money "in house". He'll have Cotto fight the likes of Pacquiao, Chavez Jr, Margarito and even Clottey before he thinks about Mora.

Having said that, I think Mora is going to beat Mosley. He doesnt have much power but he is a smart, hungry fighter with skills. I think this fight might be one too many for Shane, Who has always struggled with tall boxer's who can jab and control range.

even if mora fought for top rank he would still be the last option out of the names you mentioned. besides maybe clottey.
