Comments Thread For: Mikes Jones Proves His Welterweight Worth in Atlantic City

After a nervous opening round, 27-year old Welterweight Mike Jones (22-0, 18 KO) of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, established control and ran over 31-year old Puerto Rican veteran Irving Garcia (17-5-3, 8 KO) in five rounds on Friday night at the Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey. The knockout blow left some room for discussion but the outcome could be little in doubt. It was Jones’s third knockout win in his last four starts. [Click Here To Read More]

[I apologize in advance for the rant]
I'm sorry Cliff, but you're reporting on the Jones/Garcia fight is a bit irritating. With comments like "The knockout blow left some room for discussion but the outcome could be in little doubt." followed by a PERPOSTEROUS "It was Jones's third knockout win in his last four starts", it is quite hard to stomach the reporting as you state it here. Then you down play Garcias work by a ridiculous "It was Garcias second concecutive stoppage defeat." IT WAS A CLEAR LOW BLOW whether you like it or not.... 'Jones's third knockout win..' pshhh! Why not just call it like it was, ("Jones was on his way to a great victory before a lowblow mishap which Garcia was unable to recover from.") rather than insult the readers (and fighters) intelligence by insinuating 'Oh well, a knockout is a knockout.' Yes, Jones PROBABLY would have won, but Garcia wasn't a standing dummy either. Yes, Garcias legs looked bad, but we've seen fighters come back before. He wasn't that hurt before the low blow. BTW, I am taking nothing away from MJ, however I don't think you should be so dismissive of Garcia either. The man got a bad break there whether he would have lost or not, and it does taint a potentially great win for MJ. If the Commision has any integrity, they will reverse the decision to a NC. Again, I'm taking nothing away from MJ. My point is, reporting it like this undermines the true facts in this situation.
I personally don't understand broadcasters and journalists who, when a bad or iffy stoppage is made, comment that basically "Oh well, bad break - but they would have lost anyway." I mean WTF? You, they - DON'T know that. According to that logic, why even watch then, or better yet let's just make ALL bouts 6 rounds so it won't have time to go the other way. Fights can and have turned in a second, and thats the beauty of boxing. Take Bute/Andrade I for instance. With a few more seconds and better reffing, who knows? And Bute outboxed Andrade all night long. There's tons of other examples, Mosely/Mayorga - Briggs/Sergei Liakhovich etc. etc. That's my point. Come on.
