That could have been a reason.
Vitali was just another fighter, he wasn't deemed to be the next big thing so no need for any sort of rematch.
He wasn't being hailed as Lewis' successor at the time.

Lewis would have KO'd if they rematch, which is why he retired instead. Just think about it, would you rather your last fight be a win or a loss?
