Zavec vs Jackiewicz II: 4th September in Ljubljana

    http://en.dejanzavec.com/news.html

    Ljubljana, 8.7.2010
    - On Saturday 4th September Dejan Zavec will defend his IBF world champion title in welterweight category against the first challenger, Rafal Jackiewicz in the Ljubljana’s new 12.000 capacity arena.

The place and the date of the fight have been unclear for a long time, as candidates were Poland, Germany, Slovenia and even USA. Finally, the story has got an epilogue – Mr. Sympaticus will defend the title in Slovenia on 4th September in the new arena of Stozice Sport Park in Ljubljana. “It means a lot to me to defend the title against Jackiewicz at home” was Zavec pleased and gave weight to the fact at the same time: “It will not be easier because it is going to be a home match, however it will be closer to the fans and to the people who give me support”.

The match between a 34 year old Dejan Zavec (29-1-0 (17 KOs)) and a one year younger Pole Rafal Jackiewicz (36-8-1 (18 KOs)) will be special for several reasons. It is going to be the clash between the two fighters who have met in Katovice on 29th November 2008 already, where Jackiewicz won after an arguable referee’s decisions. This has been the only defeat in the professional career of the Slovenian Champion so far.
An established online boxing portal BoxRec awarded the fight with the highest five stars. Beside their past fight experience and undisputable quality of the boxers, the venue is also adding to the exclusiveness of the match. The new arena in Ljubljana with 12.000 seats will be able to offer a real show for spectators. Zavec has showed contentment about it: “I wish this event would be something really special and unique. I believe the interest will be high and the arena full.”

This guy is getting insanely popular back home in Slovenia. I am glad he's fighting the #1 challenger to his strap though as well as avenging his only loss. I'll keep supporting this dude as long as he doesn't hold that title hostage and make Slovenia look bad.

Zaveck deserved to win the first fight, but there was some home cooking with the judges in Poland.

But now he'll have his opportunity for revenge.

I thought he won pretty clearly. Hopefully he'll put on a shut-out performance and the next time we'll see him it'll be on HBO. Berto said he was interested in unifying with Zavec, so we'll see...
