Update: Antonio Escalante of El Paso will meet Edel Ruiz (34-22-4) from Los Mochis, Mexico. Friday August 6, 2010 at the Don Haskins Center.
Original story: EL PASO -- Antonio Escalante, El Paso's world-ranked featherweight boxer, will hold a press conference at 2 p.m. today at the Camino Real Hotel to announce his next fight.
Escalante, 23-2 (14 knockouts), will fight an opponent to be named on Friday, Aug. 6 in the Don Haskins Center. The bout will be televised live on Telefutura's "Solo Boxeo Tecate."
Escalante, winner of nine straight fights, has moved up from 122 pounds to 126 and is now ranked No. 2 in the world by the World Boxing Association and the World Boxing Organization. He was supposed to fight Argentina's Carlos Ricardo Rodriguez on ESPN2's "Friday Night Fights" last May. However, Escalante was sidelined with an injured right elbow in training. The injured elbow required rest and not surgery.
Escalante's last outing was an impressive unanimous decision win over Miguel Roman of Juárez. Escalante won 97-92, 96-93 and 96-93 on the cards.
The conference will be in the Camino Real's Dome Bar in Downtown El Paso.
