I don't think a tragedy is needed. The keys are the broadcasters. If they suspect the sport isn't pure and the public doesn't want to see cheaters they will refuse to broadcast.

That was the road taken by major networks in Europe in the wake of massive PED scandals in cyclling (Tour De France). So now there is a groundbreaking system in place with where-about-schemes and random testing. It's not bulletproof at all, but we're getting there.

Well that was Europe and cycling, here in the Americas we need a fkin mega tsunami to literally wash grandma away before we will get off of our asses to fix anything.
