  • Chavezes and Camachos

I'm kind of surprised to have heard hardly anything about the upcoming card featuring Hector Camacho Sr. & Jr. I realize that neither of them are contenders, but I thought someone would at least mention it. After some of his more recent performances, does everyone here think it's impossible for Camacho Jr. to make a comeback? I for one am hoping for the best.

Anyhow the most interesting part to me is the relationship growing between the Camachos and the Chavezes. Some of my thoughts on these two boxing clans:

The first get-together is this Saturday when 15-year-old Omar Chavez will be fighting in an exhibition bout on the undercard of the Hector Camacho Sr & Jr fights in Tuscon.

After a year away from the ring, which he said has helped him get back his desire for the sport, Machito's plan was to have four or five bouts to get back into things before facing quality opposition again, but his comeback is already off to a bad start. His opponent wasn't approved by the athletic commision, and he's just finding this out a few days before the fight. It's very sad for me. I want to see Machito do well, if for no other reason than to see his dad retire happily. Camacho Sr. did say that's the main reason he's still fighting--to try to help his son's career. Well, that, and to fight Chavez again, which I personally think would be the perfect match for them to both go out on.

Hopefully they'll be able to find another opponent too because Hector Camacho Jr. will be fighting again just two weeks later on July 23rd in San Jose. The strange thing about this is that he's fighting on the undercard of a Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. bout, yes, strange to me that he would be opening for a kid, even if it is a Chavez.

Not only that, but the two Juniors are supposed to share a card later this year too.

Then there's Camacho Sr. who says he wants to team up with the Hearnses also. I'm not so sure it's a great idea boxing-wise, but at least it's entertaining. They can have a big retirement party, so long as they're sure to retire afterwards.
