I can't know how he felt about fighting again, but it is no rumor that he was millions in debt to the IRS.

Maybe he was envious of Pacquiao's success at his own weight class, so he decided to comeback and indirectly take some shine off of Pac, via trying to outsell him in PPV and beat his former opponent worse than he did (JMM) as a response to what Pacquiao did to Floyd's former opponents (Delahoya & Hatton).
Maybe he really meant what he originally said, at the Post-Hatton interview, that he is taking a 24 month break. The 24/7 series did reveal the therapy he goes through to keep his hands healthy and he did say that his body is breaking down. So taking time off and enjoying the money he's made from the Delahoya-Hatton fights off was in order.
Maybe he just got tired of doing nothing and wanted to get back into the spotlight, and get back to the gym with a purpose.
Maybe he did comeback to steal more money as he claims it.
Maybe it's all of the above, who knows.
