Vazquez: “I am not going to retire!”

June 26, 2010 by Edgar Gonzalez

“I am not going to retire,” the former world champion Israel Vazquez responded from his home to BoxNoticias.net when asked what his plans were after being defeated at the hands of Rafael Marquez in their 4th fight. Vazquez spoke to his manager, Frank Espinoza, and asked for the fifth fight.

“If Rafa would have beaten me badly and I would have looked really bad, I would have announced my retirement,” Vazquez, who in the meantime has kept busy as a TV color commentator for

Telefutura’s “Solo Boxeo”, stated. “That wasn’t the case, my problem are my brows. That is something that has a solution and I am going to fix it.”

Vazquez is under contract for the next three months by Telefutura to do color commentary on their Friday night series and has decided that after that obligation is over, he will be back in the gym and in the hands of specialists for surgeries on his brows.

“I feel well physically and mentally,” Vazquez added. “I want the fifth fight with Marquez because we need the tie breaker. I think I will be ready in 2011, I need to get operated on and then I need two or three more fights before I challenge Marquez again.”

When asked that if the surgery specialist would recommend for him to retire instead of going under the knife, Vasquez responded, “maybe. I think my brows can be fixed with surgery and for them to be perfect so I can continue fighting.”

If he wants to keep fighting, that's fine. But he needs to beat some elite fighters and not bums if I'm gonna have any desire to see him get this fifth fight with Marquez he wants. And it's far from a given that Marquez will even beat Lopez. That right there alone would take luster out of a fifth fight in my view if Marquez loses to Lopez. Although it would be kind of interesting to see if Vasquez could do a little better in a fifth fight if he didn't get cut. I see Rafa taking it again if it happens though.

Doesn't he have family to convince him to retire? Or doctors or boxing commissions?

If he can actually get those brows fixed then I don't see why he shouldn't keep fighting

He has his manager who already said he won't let him fight anymore.

I hope Izzy gets the idea for his sake.

There is nothing a fighter with a bad cut history can really do to prevent the scar tissue from opening up aside from wearing protective headgear. Many fighters with cut problems have tried surgery and it didn't really work. Vazquez is an aggressive fighter and is not likely to change his style. Time off to heal is going to work against him between fights because he will not remain sharp. I feel for him wanting to continue but I know how it going to go if he does.

                    He should retire.
