The Silent Plight of the Amateur Fighter

We are all aware of how professional boxing is in dire need of some serious reforms. With bad decisions, lack of organization, fight fixing, and a lack of boxers postfight assistance, the pros are a mess. But what about the amateurs? I have been an amateur for 2 1/2 years, and I have seen atrocities. First lets start out with the scoring. The amateurs have 3 judges scoring the fight. When the decision is announced, they don't tell you the scores, that always seemed shady. Then there is the lack of organization. I went out to Pennsylvania for a Pro-Am show at the Blue Horizon, with license in hand, and discovered that I couldn't fight because there was no 125 lb. fighter there. Then there is the policy for stopping a fight. If a fighter has like 3 unanswered shots rained on him, he gets a standing eight. If a fighter is a little tired and getting hit, they stop the fight. It really is ******. The worst part may be that the promoter makes all the money and the fighters get nothing. I have to pay 30 dollars everytime I fight to renew my license. It truly is bull****. The amateurs need some serious restructuring.

I agree with you but with such shady dealings in them pro ranks it's unlikely the amatuer ranks will change once the pros are cleaned up I think there will be lots of busy bodys in the amatuers. Not sure if that will be good mind you.

Is having 3 judges better than having five in your opinion?

A standing 8 count is needed whenyou get hit with 3 unanswered shots. Amateurs consist of kids at times. dont forget the pee wees. Didnt your coach tell you to keep your hands up. There should be no reason to be a little tired because as an amateur you should be running about 2-5 miles at least 3 times a week. Ring generalship is the key. cutting the ring looks good in front of the judges. I dont think your coaches are training you well. When i was a pee-wee, my coach reviewed my looses and we improved, not complain. Also when you spar, it should be live. None of that pitty pat stuff. Remember start your combos with a jab and throw 3 or more punches in a combo. Youll get tired, but its only 3 or 4 rounds. believe me I kick a lot of pros asses with this and I am no where near the shape theyre in. Dont box for the money, do it because you love the game.

I hear ya. The reason amateur Boxing is ****ed up like it is, is because it doesn't have a huge following like other, safer sports; because lets face it, its a cult sport, only thing being behind it is MMA. However lately I've been seeing a lot of MMA gyms popping up, so things may change. As technology advances, and scans of the human brain become more commonplace, complex, and accurate, it seems Boxing becomes more and more of an ignored sport. In Britian a few years ago they tried to outright ban the sport altogether, and used a bunch of 'Boxing and the Brain' type research to back it up. I looked up the article and read it. The President, or, prime minister, as they like to call their leaders..rejected it, probably having boxed himself or respected the sport for his own reasons.

To alot of people, there's nothing uglier in the world than a fight. They fail to appreciate the sight of a person overcoming risks and putting his well being on the line to achieve greatness. Because alot of people like this breathe in our world, amateur boxing's foundations are about as solid as a New Orleans coastline property during the middle of August last year. The fighters end up paying for most of it. No other collegiate sport requires the athletes to pay just under 50 to compete, when's the last time you've heard of a college basketball player paying money to play a game, something needs to be done about it, but it likely won't happen unless someone with a deep pocket(dibella) and a love for boxing(dibella) makes the right ****in phone call.

** Nobody wants to watch the amateurs. Their too far removed from the pros now. I don't understand why grownup boys want to play house with 3 rounders when they could turn pro and earn some change and learn the game better. I'd be embarrassed to be an amateur after 17-18 yrs of age.

the guy wasn't even talking about the competition being gimp or anything like that, and you go and make it sound like he's trying to sound like a tough guy, which he wasnt. he said nothing about 'tough' in that sense, not sure what made you take that from what he typed..actually, now I just got a bright idea. He was criticizing the officials, and you took offense. But instead of give him a real reply, you changed around what he said to make him look like an ******* when he didn't even say that. you're a special person(with a low iq)...have a good one

p.s. jackie says hi, she cant come to the keyboard right now- under my covers and all.

Aswell, whats the big deal with showing up for a bout and not having a suitable opponent, it happens all of the time. Its part of the game.

And talking nasty about Jackie is just classless. The woman has a great companion and no need for pretenders.

If you dont like that the refs give 8 counts after 3 blows are landed then, like I said, go jump in the pro ring. I would venture to bet that after a few rounds in a pro ring you will be happy that the refs in the amatuers look out for the guys as they do.

The amatuers need no restructuring, they are fine.

                Rockin'

actually it wasn't fine. you **** talked your way and tried to make it sound like he was trying to act like a tough guy...hence you saying 'If the amateurs arent tough enough for you, then go pro' when he said nothing about being tough. You're just a straight up *******, and nothing can change that. You saw his complaining about a 30 dollar fee to fight as a wage cut for YOUR PATHETIC ****ING ASS, who's all for leeching the fighter's wallet... who ****** at boxing, so he became an official. i can't stand refs who became refs because they ******, ESPECIALLY ******* LIKE YOU WHO DIDNT MAKE IT OUT OF THE AMATEURS. although I respect the refs that had small professional careers, but not the ******* like you who never made it out of the amateurs.

the only reason i **** talked jackie was to press your buttons, you used to talk about her being your mommy and stuff so I figured i'd throw it in.

                have a good one.

"I have to pay 30 dollars everytime I fight to renew my license."

THAT IS NOT ACCURATE. YOU RENEW YOUR LICENSE ONCE EACH YEAR

as a former amateur fighter, the one thing that really bothered me about the amatuers was the fact that, if one guy was behind in the fight it was hard to come back on the scorecards because the judges tended to watch the guy that looked better or landed the better shots early, so the other guy's punches landed weren't scored. also, i met a guy who fought for the amatuer canadian title at middleweight and should have won but he was given a loss because he's first nations ancestry ( however, this happened in the 1960's and in an extremely racist part of canada )
