Boxing is a hard sport, right from novice level up to the olympics and the top pros. You will get hit, and that can hurt. But as for brain damage which seems to be the main concern, the pro game is more dangerous, the longer fights and the increased level of punishment is what causes the real serious damage.
In the amateurs, especially at the novice level, the ref is really there to protect you, and when you are visibly stunned or wobbled significantly you will be awarded (awarded lol, not really the right word) an 8-count. 3 of these in a round for a senior and 2 for a junior and the fight is over. It is pretty safe, I mean you can still get knocked out, but it's rare.
I mean me personally, I've been through the stage where you fight other guys with only a few fights, moved up to fighting guys with 8-10 fights, and now I fight and am looking to fight guys with more than 20 fights and guys who have been around for a while, and the most I have gotten hurt in a fight or sparring would probably be a bloody nose, or a mild headache.
