    marketing and boxing popularity

What could be changed in the sport of boxing to bring it into all our homes and onto the ****** box for free? Every one holds contempt for Don King and the like for holding fighters from glory. He holds hostage the big fights because of his own money making stratagies. How does he help boxing? He puts money into his own pocket the fighters fight to fill theirs. I personally am atracted to the sport and i could care less how lavishly Tyson spent his money or how much money is changing hands after a fight it doesn't affect me in any way. Money doesn't atract fans and boxing will always lose out in endoursments to team sports because Nike's and gatorade don't win fights. And team sports represent schools and cities not just fighters crying about their money problems. I don't really have a point other than it isn't Lennox Lewis's fault boxing sucks and it isn't all Don King's fault either it's just that the sport lacks marketing and with it inspiration. If i'm gonna pay another fifty bucks for a fight that lasts 2 rounds i'd feel better if i knew that a tenth of it at least went to a fighters chosen charity and not just an extra lamborghini for his dog and ten for ol' Don King.

Yea, I agree, It has to start with the heavyweight division. I think the lackluster heavyweight division is a big part of the problem

The thing is for boxing to be on free television the fighters have to appeal to more than just boxing fans. The heavyweight division is usaully the flagship for boxing but with the likes of Ruiz and Byrd that's not likely to happen even Mike Tyson spoilt things because he presented a very unsavioury image of the heavyweight champion. There are still lots of people around that would rather not spend time watching a guy that's convicted of ****, bytes ears off and beats up motorists. Sponsers also don't really want to be involved with that kind of image.

        Network Assistance

All boxing needs is ONE NETWORK to televise big fights, on the right dates, for FREE to the public. Think, if Barrera-Morales was on ESPN2, SpikeTV, USA, etc., the ratings would have been through the roof! Instead, about half a million hardcore fans got to see it, but the general public has no idea about either fighter or the magnitude of the event. Sponsorships play a big role too, so the promoters need to look towards some companies outsie of the liquor industry to kick down some cash....who's it gonna be? Well how about the Kaiser Permanente blood & cuts update, or the Swatch round clock, or ring card girls sponsored by SI's swimsuit edition, or shoot have each individual round sponsored by a different company to show the fight commercial free? - SacTown1
